Welcome to the Reality Check

You have found your way here because you suspect that the “official story” doesn’t add up.

You hear politicians promising “green growth” and “technological salvation,” yet you see the climate destabilizing, biodiversity collapsing, and inequality widening. You see a government pushing a Fast-track Bill that treats our finite natural heritage as a one-off liquidation sale. You see “resilience” plans that ignore the laws of physics.

You are right to be skeptical. The math doesn’t work.

Welcome to Wise Response.

Since 2013, we have operated as Aotearoa New Zealand’s coalition of “adults in the room.” Founded under the patronage of Sir Alan Mark and Sir Geoffrey Palmer , we are a collective of scientists, engineers, legal experts, and thinkers who refuse to ignore the elephant in the room: Infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible.

For over a decade, we have fought this battle in the Environment Court, in Select Committees, and in technical submissions to the Productivity and Infrastructure Commissions. We have done the hard work of calculating Energy Return on Investment (EROI) and exposing the biophysical impossibility of “decoupling” GDP from environmental damage.

But technical submissions are no longer enough. The crisis is accelerating, and the political response—exemplified by the “fraud” of recent legislation—is regressing.

Why this Substack?

We are launching this publication to bring our research, our debates, and our 2025 Manifesto directly to you. We are moving beyond the dry language of policy papers to tell the story of what comes next.

Here, we don’t sell “hopium.” We don’t promise that electric cars will solve the climate crisis without a reduction in consumption. Instead, we advocate for Biosphere Integrity—the radical but necessary idea that the economy must operate within the limits of the earth system, not the other way around .

In this blog, you will find:

  • The Uncomfortable Truths: Rigorous analysis of “Energy Descent” and why we must transition from a “Supply and Demand” economy to a “Service and Availability” society.

  • The Treaty Pathway: How we are combining biophysical science with the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to design a future based on the equitable satisfaction of universal basic needs.

  • Real Resilience: Practical, evidence-based strategies for community survival, challenging the government’s “fantasy” resilience planning.

If you are ready to stop fighting the symptoms and start redesigning the system, you are in the right place. Join us as we map the path from a crumbling growth economy to a wise, enduring future.
